Chama teacher takes own life over “low account balance and school fees pressure.”

A 50-year-old deputy headteacher at Ng’anjo Bazimu Primary School in Chief Tembwe’s area, Chama District, has died in an alleged suicide incident linked to financial distress.

The matter was reported at Chama Police Station today, 6th January 2026, at 08:30 hours by the school’s headteacher, Solomon Visati Lungu, also aged 50, who resides in the teachers’ compound at the same school.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has told Breeze FM News that the now-deceased, identified as Clement Mwewa, reportedly left the teachers’ compound yesterday, 5th January 2026, around 07:00 hours and headed to Chama Town Centre to withdraw money from the bank to pay school fees for his daughter, who recently passed her Grade 9 examinations.

“Sources close to the deceased says he had some financial problems due to over borrowing and he wasn’t even managing to provide properly for his family hence it could be a reason for committing suicide”, Mr. Mweemba has disclosed.

He says the body of the deceased was only discovered today, 6th January 2026, at about 06:00 hours, lying outside the Deputy Headteacher’s office, facing upwards.

Detectives from Chama Police Station who rushed to the scene found melted tablets suspected to be Quick Force maize preservative and a bottle of palm wine with a strong chemical smell consistent with the preservative substance near the body.

Police conducted a physical inspection on the body and observed no visible injuries. The body was later collected and deposited at Chama District Hospital mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
