‎The United Prosperous And Peaceful Zambia, UPPZ, is calling for changes to the salary scale for civil servants.

‎Party leader Charles Chanda says the government must increase pay for workers.

He argues that low salaries are the main reason corruption continues in the country.

‎Mr Chanda says the people hired to stop corruption often end up being tempted because their own pockets are empty.

‎He also spoke about the difference between what politicians earn and what technocrats take home.

He said it is unfair that leaders give themselves huge pay packages while civil servants suffer in silence.

‎The UPPZ leader linked the financial struggles of workers to a rise in suicide cases.

‎He made his remarks while commenting on the benefits members of parliament receive.

Mr Chanda noted that when Parliament is dissolved in May, MPs will get a gratuity. He said they use that money to build houses and buy expensive cars.

‎He contrasted that with the situation of an average teacher.

‎According to Mr Chanda, a teacher walks to work on foot until the day they retire. He said some only manage to build a house after twenty years of service.
