Chief Mailo of the Lala people of Serenje District, Central Province, has vowed to work closely with the Government to end property grabbing in his chiefdom, which leaves widows and orphans vulnerable and homeless.
The Traditional Leader explained that the practice typically occurs when relatives of the deceased seize property, disregarding the rights of the surviving family members.
He highlighted the severe consequences, including financial instability, emotional distress, and social displacement for the victims.
Chief Mailo emphasized that property grabbing is illegal in Zambia, as the Intestate Succession Act and the Wills and Administration of Testate Estates Act were enacted to protect the rights of heirs and ensure fair distribution of a deceased person’s estate.
He made the remarks in Nsomaulwa during a tour of his chiefdom, in an exercise locally known as Umulondo.
The Lala Chief committed to joining stakeholders in educating the community about the legal rights of widows and orphans and the importance of having a will to prevent property grabbing.
He said he would raise awareness about their rights and the legal consequences of such actions.
The Chief pledged to work closely with the government, local authorities, and legal bodies to ensure that cases of property grabbing are reported and prosecuted, enhancing the enforcement of existing laws and providing a deterrent to potential offenders.
Chief Mailo also stated that he would utilize traditional courts to resolve disputes related to property grabbing, offering a more accessible and culturally relevant forum for addressing such issues.
The Traditional Leader promised to advocate for stronger enforcement of property rights and support legislative changes that further protect vulnerable groups from property grabbing.
Chief Mailo believes his steps can help safeguard the rights of his community members and ensure that the property of deceased individuals is distributed fairly and legally.
