Chipangali Council Chairperson Maxson Nkhoma has urged authorities in Eastern Province to stop what he described as the unjust treatment of Zambians crossing into Malawi to buy fuel at more affordable prices.

Mr Nkhoma said motorists had been frustrated by unmet promises of fuel prices as low as K12 per litre, which remain at K36 locally.

He added that many had turned to Malawi, where fuel costs K18 per litre, only to face arrests and threats from law enforcement.

He criticised the authorities for not delivering on their promise of cheaper fuel and called on the police to refrain from penalising citizens looking for a more affordable alternative.

He described the situation as “agonising” and stressed the need for a resolution to high fuel prices, which he said was the root cause of the issue.
