Chipangali, Eastern Province (Zambia Daily Mail) – A 55-year-old football referee has allegedly been murdered in Chipangali District after being attacked by players and supporters during a football match for allegedly failing to signal a foul.
The deceased has been identified as Donald Tonga, who was officiating a match involving Mikango United Football Team of Raban Village in Chief Mshawa against Leopard United of Magodi Village.
Incident Happened During Tournament Organised by MP Andrew Lubusha
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the tragic incident, stating that it happened today, May 7, 2026, between 12:05 hours and 13:30 hours, at Mchenga Primary School Grounds in Chief Mafuta’s area.
The match was part of a football tournament organised by Chipangali Member of Parliament Andrew Lubusha, featuring 16 invited teams competing on a knockout basis.
Referee Allegedly Assaulted After Failing to Blow Whistle
According to police, the violence erupted during the first half of the match when a foul was committed but the referee allegedly did not blow his whistle.
“During the first half of the match, a foul was committed, but the referee did not blow his whistle. This angered the Mikango United players, who protested and immediately began assaulting the referee,” Mr Mweemba said.
Police revealed that the referee attempted to run away to safety but was chased down by the players and supporters who continued attacking him.
Donald Tonga Sustained Deep Head Injury
Mr Mweemba explained that the referee suffered a deep cut on the left side of his head, which appeared to be the only major visible injury.
The mob reportedly used fists, kicks, stones, and a bamboo stick during the brutal assault.
Referee Pronounced Dead Upon Arrival at Clinic
Donald Tonga was later rushed to Chamasongo Clinic, where medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Police officers who visited the clinic reportedly found his body lying in a pool of blood.
Police Launch Investigations
Authorities have since launched investigations into the matter as the incident has sparked outrage among members of the public, with many calling for justice and stronger security at community sports events.
