POLICE in Choma District in Southern Province has confiscated about 300 bags of Zambia National Service (ZNS) branded mealie meal from a house belonging to a teacher of Nahumba Primary School.
And ZNS Southern Region Commander Maybin Mundengo states that the mealie meal that was confiscated in Choma was destined for Sinazongwe district ZNS outlet according to the records.
In an Statement made available to ZANIS on Friday, Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Auxenxio Daka revealed that the police officers raided the house after a tip-off from the members of the community.
“The police conducted the operation after the office of the District Commissioner received a report from a concerned resident that Kaseba Musolesi of Macha road compound, who is also a Deputy Head Teacher at Nahumba Primary School, was in possession of the commodity and was selling the ZNS mealie meal at K320 at his house,” he said.
Mr. Daka explained that the police confiscated about 143 breakfast mealie meal bags, and about 139 roller mealie bags, that were stacked in the sitting room of the accused.
The Commanding Officer stated that the accused ran away before the police arrived, leaving his wife and kids who later disclosed that this is not the first time they are engaging in this business.
Meanwhile, Col. Mundengo, who was present at the scene, wondered why the mealie meal that was destined for Sinazongwe district ZNS outlet according to the records was discovered in Choma.
“According to the records, this mealie meal was bought from Monze district ZNS milling destined for Sinazongwe. Now I am wondering how it found itself here,” he said.
Col. Mundengo has since warned the members of public that are involved in the illegal mealie meal business to refrain or face the wrath of the law.
He however appreciated the members of the public for being alert to cases of illegal buying and selling of the commodity and encouraged them to continue informing security wings on any suspicions.
