Ndola-based senior clergyman Reverend Chilekwa Mulenga has expressed disappointment with the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) over its decision to welcome former officials from the opposition Patriotic Front (PF), whom the party previously labelled as corrupt and criminal.
Reverend Mulenga was reacting to the recent defection of several former PF officials to the UPND, a development he says raises serious concerns about consistency and integrity in Zambia’s political landscape.
He noted that the move could weaken public confidence in political leadership, as citizens may begin to question the sincerity of political messages and promises made by leaders.
The clergyman warned that such contradictions risk eroding trust, especially among voters who expect political parties to remain firm on principles and accountability.
Reverend Mulenga further observed that the trend reflects a deeper problem in Zambia’s politics, where ideology appears to be missing.
He argued that the absence of clear values and guiding principles among political players has contributed to confusion among voters, making it difficult for citizens to distinguish parties based on policy direction and national interest.
He added that politics without ideology leaves much to be desired, and called for a shift towards issue-based politics anchored on national development and accountability.
Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from UPND National Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa proved futile by broadcast time, as his phone went unanswered.
