The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has convicted former Matero Boys guidance teacher, Alifas Banda, sentencing him to eight years’ imprisonment with hard labour for theft by servant involving over K700,000.
It is alleged that the Reformed Church of Zambia cleric stole K717,600 between January 1, 2025, and March 7, 2025, in Lusaka.
Facts before the court indicate that Banda stole the money while employed in the public service as a teacher and possessed the funds by virtue of his employment.
Magistrate Silvia Munyinya found Mr Banda guilty, noting that he abused his office as a civil servant and showed no remorse. This led to the removal of over a thousand students from the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) General Certificate of Education (GCE) system. She deemed the amount involved substantial, warranting the conviction.
Shortly after the judgment, Alifas notified the court of his intention to appeal and apply for bail.
