The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) has praised the Zambia Police command on the Copperbelt for upholding citizens’ rights to assemble.
The Alliance acknowledges the police’s recognition that multipartyism in Zambia is constitutionally protected, including citizens’ rights of association and assembly.
UKA Chairman Sakwiba Sikota commended the police for departing from past practices that denied peaceful assembly.
Sikota observed that the positive shift was evident during a rally held by the Citizen First political party in Kitwe last Saturday.
He noted that the police allowed UKA members to attend church services at different congregations in Ndola and Kitwe without interference.
Sikota asserts that unlike previous instances, security concerns were not raised as a reason to halt opposition rallies.
He emphasized that the police, as part of society, should support citizens’ participation in their chosen political parties through assembly and association.
Sikota recommended that the Copperbelt’s policing approach should serve as an example for the nation.
