WHILE the Government is trying to alleviate the effects of drought which left millions hungry, by providing different interventions in farming, some people were busy trying to frustrate their efforts.
However, their run of frustrating government efforts had short legs as the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and Zambia Police Service jointly intercepted a consignment of agricultural inputs meant for distribution under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).
The operation, conducted in Chakanga Village, Chembe District, led to the seizure of the following items: 79 x 80 kilogramme bags of soya beans, 65 x 25 kilogramme bags of soya beans and 7 x 20 kilogramme bags of groundnuts.
According to a statement issued by DEC public relations officer Allan Tamba, the inputs were being repackaged for illegal sale, a practice that undermines government’s efforts to boost agricultural production.
DEC has vowed to continue monitoring the distribution of farming inputs and collaborating with law enforcement agencies to apprehend those involved in such illicit activities.
Tamba said the suspects in this case are currently at large.
