Democratic Union (DU) President Ackim Antony Njobvu has urged political party leaders on the importance of respecting the law, particularly regarding freedom of assembly and expression.

In a statement, the DU leader reminds citizens that while Article 21 of the Constitution guarantees these rights, they are regulated by law, as outlined in the Penal Code (Sections 64-68).

NJobvu has urged leaders to abide by the law and respect the regulatory framework, warning that deliberate non-compliance will attract consequences from law enforcement.

“Our goal is to demonstrate what responsible politics looks like. The DU believes in upholding the rule of law and promoting wise, respectful leadership,” Njobvu added.

Meanwhile, Njobvu has also urged the Zambia Police to facilitate peaceful assemblies when notified, further urging the service to avoid actions that might provoke unnecessary conflict.

NJobvu noted that though freedom of assembly is a fundamental right, it must be exercised within the bounds of the law.

The opposition leader has recently emphasized on the need to strike a balance between individual rights and maintaining public order as the country counts down to the August 13th, 2026 polls, a general election he says his party aims to come out victorious and form government.
