A group of likeminded individuals with a membership of 129 Persons with Disabilities based in Lumezi district has received a business boost of K70, 000 from the Constituency Development Fund CDF loan empowerment after their successful application in 2023.
The total membership of the Cooperative is comprised of 69 male and 60 female, all of varying backgrounds in the district.
The Cooperative which prior to receiving their empowerment funds underwent training organized by the Council has been given a loan repayment window of up to three years at a minimal interest rate of 5 percent.
Lumezi Disabled Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society is amongst the 25 CDF loans beneficiaries of the K3,090,251 that was disbursed by Lumezi Town Council in July this year after submitting a viable poultry business proposal to the satisfaction of the Local Authority.
Cooperative Secretary, Sylvester Phiri explains that out of the K70, 000 CDF loan empowerment disbursed, they have since withdrawn a total of K61, 000 for their poultry business project.

Mr. Phiri said the Cooperative ordered 1, 000 chicks that are to be delivered on 4th October, 2023 and other relevant stock for their business at a cost of K36,705 and intend to run two separate poultry houses. The first which will consist 400 chickens will be around Lumezi Sub-centre while the other with 600 birds will be in Mwasemphagwe.
He said the group intends to employ four residents of Lumezi in their poultry project as a way to empower others through the CDF monies received with a target to expand the project and also venture into alternative businesses in the near future.
In the year 2022, the Cooperative attempted and applied for CDF grants but were unsuccessful. This however, did not discourage them as another attempt was made for 2023 where they successfully received the K70, 000.
And Lumezi Town Council Chairperson, Oliver Mwale who recently attended the group’s general meeting with all members to strategize on the business plan execution expressed delight the Cooperative has undoubtedly exhibited that disability is not inability, considering their commitment to their project.
Mr. Mwale said this is the first group comprising Persons with Disabilities to come together with a common cause to be economically viable and have demonstrated capacity to do even better than others who are not physically challenged.
He implored on the Cooperative leadership to always remind their membership that CDF monies received are public which have to be repaid because it was a loan acquired at an extremely cheaper interest rate.
