DOG OWNER JAILED 9 MONTHS, LAWYER WARNS DOG OWNERS

Renowned Lawyer Dickson Jere has urged dog owners to familiarise themselves with the laws concerning keeping of dogs.

This follows after a dog owner was sentenced to nine months imprisonment in a case involving the death of a child.

Jere, who previously served as Special Assistant to the Fourth Republican President Rupiah Banda, emphasised the importance of adhering to the law.

He referred to The People v Chanda Bwalya, where negligence in dog ownership led to the tragic death of a child and a custodial sentence.

Jere noted that the case underscores the need to adhere to the Control of Dogs Act.

He stated that every dog over three months must be registered every year.

Jere added that only two dogs can be kept without a special permit, and vaccination against Rabies is mandatory.

He further explained that dogs must be confined in kennels or enclosures during the day, and breeding of dogs without a license is prohibited.

Jere urged dog owners to make sure they have all these requirements in place to avoid problems in the future.
