DRIVING SCHOOLS TO REGISTER WITH TEVETA – MUTATI

Government has disclosed that all driving schools across the country will be will be registered with the Technical, Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority – TEVETA to ensure well coordinated quality skills development programs for drivers.

Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati said at a press briefing today that, government firmly believes that concrete empowerment, especially for the youth lies in well-coordinated quality skills development programs which include those of drivers as the transport and logistics sector is one of the sub-sectors that provide a lot of job opportunities.

Mr Mutati said it is for this reason there is need to impart on people competitive driving skills for effective development of the country.

“We should not expect to be competitive if we do not get it right with skills because they are key in transforming our economy and the lives of our people. In this respect, government is resolved to invest in skills development in recognition of its significant role in promoting economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction” Mr Mutati said.

The minister said TEVETA worked with the Road Transport and Safety Agency RTSA to develop the driver training curriculum that is in use in most driver training schools and therefore, the registration will make the schools compliant to the TEVET Act and make them recognized to effectively contribute to empowering the youth with driving skills for jobs and employment creation.

And Mr Mutati has extended an amnesty up to 31st December, 2022 to driver training schools that are compliant with the RTSA Act to apply for registration and accreditation with TEVETA at a 50 percent discount on registration fees.

He said registration with TEVETA will make driving schools eligible to participate in government skills empowerment programs including support from the Constituency Development Fund.

“TEVETA, is by law, required to register all training institutions that offer or intend to offer training leading to technical and vocational qualifications. TEVETA has already started engagements with relevant stakeholders in the transport sector to ensure that all driver training schools comply with the TEVET Act” he said.
