Zambian Digest reports that Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has slammed former president Edgar Lungu for allegedly inciting citizens to rise against the government before the next elections in 2026.

Lungu, on Sunday, charged that it was possible to have a change of government before the 2026 general elections.

But SACCORD acting executive director Arthur Muyunda said it is unfortunate that the former president could utter such words.

Muyunda said in an interview that Lungu should be the last person to speak in such a manner as it was expected that he understood Zambia only held elections in five-year cycles.

“It is unfortunate that some people are finding these statements pleasing when they are a recipe for conflict. It is also unfortunate to hear such utterances from the former head of state, which are a repeat of similar statements made not long ago,” Muyunda said.

Muyunda advised the former president to censure what he says because of his public status.

He observed that as a senior citizen, Lungu should be an advisor on how civil politics should be conducted as opposed to issuing statements that could disturb the country’s peace.
