Fatal Road Traffic Accident on Ester Lungu Road, Chilanga

June 17, 2024-The Zambia Police Service regrets to inform the public of a fatal road traffic accident that occurred today June 17, 2024, at approximately 08:00 hours along Esther Lungu Road between the ZESCO Substation and Gondwe Compound in Lilayi.

The accident involved a Toyota Hiace Public Service Vehicle a minibus with registration number ALF 677 and fleet number LSK 16232, which was extensively damaged. The minibus was driven by Mr. Kandusa Musa, aged 34, of house number 201/1, Chawama, who sustained a suspected pelvic fracture and general body pain. Onboard the minibus were four passengers and a conductor:

1. Mr. Godfrey Mukuma, aged 26, of John Leng Compound, Lusaka, who sustained a fractured left leg, head injuries, and general body pain. His condition is critical.
2. Ms. Alice Phiri, aged 45, of an unmarked house in Misisi Compound, Lusaka, who sustained a swollen forehead, a deep cut on the right hand, bruises on the head, and general body pain.
3. Mr. Bwalya Steward, aged 34, of Gondwe Compound, Lilayi, who sustained a backache, neck ache, painful left leg, and general body pain.
4. Mr. James Musukuma, aged 20, of Gondwe Compound, who sustained a painful right leg, painful hands, bruised left foot, and general body pain.
5. Mr. Sunday Musukuma (conductor), aged 21, of Gondwe Compound, who sustained a painful left hand and general body pain.

All the victims are receiving medical attention at Chawama Level One Hospital. The condition of the driver and four passengers is stable, except for one passenger whose condition remains critical.
The accident also involved a pedestrian, Mr. Bertinico Lifuna, aged 36, of Lilayi, who sustained a deep cut on the head and a fractured left leg. Tragically, Mr. Lifuna was carrying his four-year-old child, Belita Lifuna, who sustained fatal injuries. Both Mr. Bertinico Lifuna and Belita Lifuna died on the spot. Their bodies are currently at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial. Next of kin have been informed.

The accident occurred when the minibus, traveling from North to South, attempted to overtake another vehicle improperly on an unclear road and collided with the pedestrian who was walking off the road in the opposite lane.

The Zambia Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. We urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such tragic incidents.
