A 42-YEAR-OLD father and his 20-year-old son have been arrested for allegedly killing a man after a misunderstanding.

The accused, Obert Kalunga, a driver of Ndeke Township, was arrested together with his son, Noro Kalunga.

Police identified the victim as Innocent Kapenda, 34, of Luangwa Township.

Things reportedly got heated after Kalunga tried to offer a lift to the victim’s girlfriend.

This happened on Sunday around 01:30 hours along the Kitwe-Ndola dual carriageway.

Copperbelt Province police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said Kapenda was in the company of his girlfriend and four friends drinking alcohol.

Mr Mweemba said the couple had a misunderstanding, which made the girlfriend leave her boyfriend and look for transport to go back to Chimwemwe Township.

He said the woman stood by the road and hiked a bus, which was being driven by Kalunga.

But Kapenda immediately showed up to try and prevent his girlfriend from leaving, and in the process started exchanging insults with Obert and his son.

The two drove off, leaving the lady behind. But Kapenda is said to have given chase in another vehicle with his friend and managed to intercept the bus, blocking its way.
They then started throwing bottles at the bus, breaking its windscreen and injuring Obert.

Obert is said to have tried to drive off, but the victim and his friends continued throwing stones at the bus.

It was then that Obert and his son got off the bus and started hitting the victim with metal bars.

Mr Mweemba said the duo also hit the victim’s friend, Simon Musonda, 30, who sustained a cut on his neck, but managed to run away and report the matter to police officers at the checkpoint.

He said the suspects later arrived with the victim, who was still alive in the bus as Musonda was being interviewed by the police.

Mr Mweemba said the victim died on the way to Kitwe Central Police Station.

Mr Mweemba said Musonda’s condition has been described as critical.
