A 61-year-old Lusaka man has dragged his own 31-year-old son to court after allegedly enduring repeated drunken behaviour, insults, and nighttime disturbances that have reportedly turned their home into a conflict zone.
According to a report published by Kalemba News, Severino Musonda of Lusaka took his son, Royd Musonda, to the Matero Local Court seeking a restraining order, claiming the young man had become a danger to the household.
The accused, said to be from SOS Shanty Compound, allegedly jumps over the wall fence whenever he finds the gate locked late at night.
Musonda told the court that his son, who reportedly sleeps in the living room of his parents’ two-bedroom house, becomes violent and verbally abusive whenever he is intoxicated.
He claimed Royd frequently threatens to uproot the gate and insult everyone in the compound, leaving the family living in fear.
The father further complained that Royd also has a habit of demanding nshima when drunk, despite not contributing anything to the home. “Whenever he comes home late, around 02:00 hours, he finds the gate locked and jumps over the wall fence. He also starts insulting. I fail to beat him because I know it would turn into a crime,” Musonda reportedly told the court.
Meanwhile, Royd admitted to coming home late and causing confusion but pleaded with his parents for forgiveness, stating that he still needed to live with them because he was unemployed. “Dad forgive me for what I keep doing, I’m not working right now and I’m asking for your forgiveness,” he told the court.
Matero Local Court Magistrate Lewis Mumba questioned why a 31-year-old man would still be living in his parents’ house while demanding food he did not buy. The magistrate reminded Royd that he was old enough to live independently and warned him to change his behaviour.
Royd was given a one-month warning, with the court advising the father to bring him back if the behaviour continues.
