Family Development Initiatives (FDI) has welcomed the introduction of epidural anaesthesia at the University Teaching Hospital Women and Newborn Hospital.

The Muslim Faith-Based Organisation (FBO) has described it as a transformative step in maternal healthcare.

FDI Team Leader, Sheikh Yusuf Ayami, has urged widespread sensitisation to dispel myths and cultural misconceptions that have long discouraged women from seeking pain relief during childbirth.

The Muslim faith leader underscored the importance of religious voices in promoting accurate health information.

Sheikh Ayami noted that Islam encourages the pursuit of knowledge and the alleviation of suffering.

He clarified that epidural anaesthesia involves the administration of medication near the spinal nerves.

The FDI Team Leader explained that this allows women to remain awake while significantly reducing labour pain.

Sheikh Ayami highlighted that this intervention not only benefits the mother but also strengthens family wellbeing by reducing birth-related trauma and enabling mothers to bond with their newborns in a calmer state.

He stated that FDI will collaborate with the Government and partners such as the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) to ensure equitable access and community education.

The Ministry of Health in Zambia officially introduced the epidural service at UTH on 12th January 2026, and since then, ten successful procedures have been recorded, marking a promising start to safer, more dignified childbirth experiences.
