Fight Inequality Alliance (FIA) Zambia has urged government to introduce fuel subsidies in response to anticipated price increases driven by instability in the Middle East.
FIA Zambia national coordinator Mputa Ngalande explained that without subsidies, the burden of higher fuel costs will fall disproportionately on poor households, widening the inequality gap.
Ngalande stressed that government must prioritise the welfare of its people rather than following external prescriptions that often undermine social protection.
He observed that listening too closely to the International Monetary Fund could lead to austerity measures that worsen poverty and limit access to essential services.
Ngalande emphasised that subsidies can serve as a buffer, ensuring that transport, businesses and households remain resilient in the face of global shocks.
He highlighted that protecting vulnerable communities through targeted support is a more sustainable path than strict adherence to IMF conditionalities.
Ngalande underscored that Zambia must chart its own course, safeguarding livelihoods and promoting inclusive growth by resisting external pressure and focusing on domestic priorities.
