FIA ZAMBIA CONCERNED ABOUT FAST DEPLETION OF ELECTRICITY UNITS

Mputa Ngalande

The Fight Inequality Alliance (FIA) Zambia is concerned about the rapid depletion of ZESCO electricity units in the country.

The alliance has since warned that the new development is deepening inequality among marginalised communities.

In a statement, Thursday, FIA Zambia National Coordinator Mputa Ngalande emphasised that the country is emerging from 20-hour load-shedding which severely affected low-income households reliant on small businesses for survival.

Ngalande highlighted that although electricity supply has improved to over 15 hours daily, the swift exhaustion of units is disadvantaging those struggling to recover.

He stressed that many small enterprises and families are finding it difficult to regain stability after losing income during the prolonged power cuts.

Ngalande urged the government to recognise that these challenges are linked to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionalities which have already placed a heavy burden on ordinary citizens.

He pointed out that people who lost their businesses are now being further undermined by the escalating cost of electricity.

Ngalande remarked that this situation is fuelling inequality and contributing to the rising cost of living across the nation.
