The government has reiterated its strong commitment to promoting inclusivity through sports.

The Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, Hon. Elvis Nkandu, has stressed the priority placed on empowering marginalized groups, particularly athletes with disabilities.

Speaking through Director of Sports, Mr. John Zulu, at the closing ceremony of the Special Olympics Training of Trainers (TOT) Coach Education programme, Hon. Nkandu underscored the government’s recognition of sports as a powerful tool for societal transformation.

He stated that the remarkable achievement of securing three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at the Special Olympics Games in Berlin, Germany, in 2023 underscores the importance of supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Hon. Nkandu further emphasized that this success is a key reason why the government has decided to include Special Olympics as the fourth sport under the Podium Performance Programme (PPP). The PPP aims to provide sustainable support and opportunities for Zambia’s high-performance athletes.

As part of this initiative, 88 teachers from various parts of the country have been certified by Special Olympics Zambia to support children with intellectual disabilities.

“This training equips participants with the skills to create an inclusive and supportive sports environment for athletes with disabilities,” Hon. Nkandu stated.

The programme focused on key areas such as behavioral management, health considerations, adaptive techniques, and mentorship.

He says the training aligns with Zambia’s broader vision of fostering equitable opportunities for all citizens.

The Minister noted that sports’ benefits go beyond physical fitness, contributing to mental health improvement and combating non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

Hon. Nkandu also commended the collaborative efforts of Special Olympics Zambia and other stakeholders.

Regional President of Special Olympics Africa, Charles Nyambe, emphasized the need for society to embrace individuals with special needs.

“Sport is one area that makes them feel valued and loved,” he said, adding that the responsibility of creating an inclusive society should not rest solely on the government. “As citizens, we must take an active role in safeguarding and supporting these individuals.”
