GOVERNMENT, ZANFOB DISCUSS ISSUES AFFECTING THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Government has met with the Zambia National Federation of the Blind (ZANFOB) to discuss wide-ranging issues affecting them.

Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Permanent Secretary Ms. Angela Kawandami received the delegation during a courtesy call and addressed critical issues impacting individuals with visual impairments.

Key topics of discussion included collaborative efforts to address gaps in policy, legislation, and implementation that hinder the effective participation of visually impaired individuals in socioeconomic activities.

Ms. Kawandami highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, including advocating for amendments to Act No. 6 of 2012 and Statutory Instrument 97 to better support the visually impaired community.

The Permanent Secretary further emphasized the importance of enhancing skills development and academic training while fostering strategic partnerships to build capacity and increase employment prospects for persons with disabilities.

And ZANFOB president, Mr. Manix Ngwira, expressed gratitude to the Government, particularly the Ministry for their proactive approach in addressing the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, and commended Ms. Kawandami for her swift action in responding to their concerns and for showing interest in improving the livelihoods of visually impaired individuals across Zambia.

Mr. Ngwira appreciated the ongoing efforts to create an inclusive society where all citizens, regardless of their disability, can actively participate and contribute to national development.
