Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum Zambia – CSEIFZ has condemned political violence in Lusaka’s Kalingalinga and Mtendere areas that left 9-year-old Mercy Kunda injured during an opposition party road show on Thursday.

The Forum has described the incident as a grave threat to Zambia’s democracy ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Elections

CSEIFZ Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Nakiwe Simpungwe said the underscores the urgent need to safeguard the democratic process.

“This tragic event underscores the urgent need to safeguard the democratic process and protect the lives of citizens who should never be subjected to violence in the course of exercising their rights,” Simpungwe has told the media in a statement.

The Forum has challenged the Zambia Police Service to urgently provide a transparent account of what led to alleged use of live ammunition against civilians, allegations police through Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi have denied, saying only teargas canisters were used to disperse opposition supporters under unclear circumstances.

But CSEIFZ, said the incident raises serious concerns about proportionality, accountability, and respect for human rights.

“Citizens deserve to know why such extreme measures were taken,” Simpungwe said.

The forum also cited another disturbing incident in Kabwata where an aspiring Member of Parliament had their campaign centre damaged by a political opponent.

The Forum said such acts threaten community safety and erode public confidence in democratic institutions.

The organization has since appealed to all political party Presidents to immediately denounce violence and discipline members involved in acts of aggression.

Meanwhile, Simpungwe noted that leaders must rise above partisan interests and send a clear message that violence has no place in Zambian politics, especially during campaigns.

“Violence not only threatens lives but also weakens institutions, destabilizes communities, and diminishes the legitimacy of outcomes,” she added.
