*KANYAMA GETS 1200 VIP TOILETS*
Press Release 13th Nov 2022
WaterAid Zambia and a local NGO, People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ) have supported the construction of 1200 toilets in Lusaka’s Kanyama area.
The exercise has been executed through the Clean Cities for Growth and Development (CCGD) project in partnership with Lusaka Water and Sanitation Company to compliment Government efforts in ending waterborne diseases.
WaterAid Zambia Programme Officer Kangwa Chinkutele stated that the project intended to promote access to sanitation services to 1200 households with access to effective and safe sanitation and solid waste management services, especially for women and girls as a direct contribution from the project responding to SDG 6 and 13.
Ms Chinkutele explained that LWSC through the Lusaka Sanitation Project (LSP) had further implemented a pre financing model and discounted the cost to facilitate the construction of the household toilet at K2,400.
“Preliminary results of this innovative financing mechanism show that the uptake by households in Kanyama community, where the project is being modelled, for the construction of toilets, has significantly increased, and that WaterAid expects the model to continue in other peri-urban areas to also ensure they are terrain specific and promote water security” she said.
