Following a spate of riots at Chinsali’s Kapasa Makasa University, as a result of the death of a student, the school Union has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to assist with an institutional ambulance to avoid further loss of lives.
Students at the university staged a riot following the death of 20-year-old David Mbale, a first-year Animal Science student who died in unclear circumstances.
University president, Chongo Bwalya notes that the urgent appeal for an ambulance is meant to avoid further loss of lives which has become perpetual at the institution, when timely medical intervention is crucial.
Mr Bwalya in an interview acknowledged the New Dawn Government’s transformational leadership in the education sector, but feels the issue to equip the university with life saving interventions remains very critical.
He said parents send children to university for them to return with an academic qualification, as opposed to receiving them in coffins, as the case has been were deaths are now occurring at the university every year.
He further notes that the distance to the nearest medical facility is about 25 Kilometres, which makes it impossible to aquire medical care in the unfortunate event of an emergency.
“Every life matters. The absence of an ambulance can lead to unnecessary delays in providing essential medical care, potentially resulting in tragic consequences. We have witnessed instances where precious lives could have been saved with prompt access to medical facilities” Mr Bwalya said.
He says providing the institution with a well-equipped ambulance, will therefore not only be safeguarding the lives of those within the campus but also setting a precedent for prioritizing the health and safety of all citizens.
He said President Hichilema’s commitment to the well-being of the nation’s youth and the future leaders of is very cardinal, hence the cry to promote a safe learning environment.
Mr Bwalya further acknowledged the challenges that come with managing public resources and priorities, but earnestly feels his appeal is justifiable going by the levels of anxiety and panic among the student population following the recent deaths involving students.
