21-year-old Mary Mwango, a Nursing School student who was reported missing by her family in January this year, has been found dead.
Her decomposed body was discovered floating in the Lukupa River in Kasama, after a tip-off from community members.
According to Christopher Mulenga, a member of the Community Crime Prevention Unit, community members who often fish in the river noticed a strong foul smell and alerted him. Upon checking, he found the body trapped among the reeds and immediately reported it to the authorities.
Ituna Ward Development Committee Chairperson Wilbroad Chishimba, also informed a Radio Mano News crew, who rushed to the scene before police and the fire brigade team retrieved the remains.
And Mary’s mother, Mabel Chansa, confirmed her daughter’s identity to Mano News, after close family members viewed the body.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear. Police have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
