KAZUNGULA BRIDGE, KEY REGIONAL TRADE GATEWAY – ECONOMIST

Kelvin Chisanga

Economist Kelvin Chisanga has described the commissioning of the Kazungula Bridge Authority as a major achievement in regional cooperation and integration.

Chisanga noted that the US$259 million infrastructure project, developed jointly by Zambia and Botswana, will function as a financially independent facility.

He indicated that toll collections estimated at US$20–40 million per year, along with warehousing and customs operations, will support its long-term financial viability.

According to the economist, the bridge has slashed crossing times from days to just hours, cutting transport expenses and boosting trade competitiveness.

He added that the venture reinforces Botswana’s position as a transit hub while unlocking greater export opportunities for Zambia.

Chisanga pointed out that local communities stand to gain from job creation and enterprise development, as more efficient supply chains drive economic activity.

The economist stressed that robust oversight and strategic administration will turn the bridge into a lasting driver of regional commerce and economic advancement.
