Ketai views body, UTH says hospital doesn’t know what newborn died from, Police claim pictures were deleted

IN THE AFTERNOON of Monday, Ketai Mwale in the company of her husband Silaki Kangwa, Police and lawyers from Legal Aid Clinic for Women, were granted access to the infant the University Teaching Hospitals-UTH claims is her lifeless child.

Despite having conducted a postmortem examination the same day DNA samples were extracted from the lifeless body of the child hospital authorities claim is hers, the University Teaching Hospital reportedly tells Ketai, “We do not know what killed your infant son”.

Sources close to the development have shared with TV Yatu that, UTH Mortuary allowed the Kangwa couple to view the lifeless remains of the infant after they went with Police officers from Kanyama Police Station.

They say when the supposed mother of the infant viewed the remains, she broke down, adding that as this transpired, her husband vehemently denied the infant they looked at was theirs. They say, Ketai was shocked to see a little looking infant, looking nothing like the one she recalls holding in her hands shortly after its birth.

The sources share that as the couple viewed the remains of the infant in the mortuary, concerns arose.

“Ketai asked the dealing Police officer to show her lawyers, the pictures of the lifeless infant they took of the infant before postmortem while at UTH, so the lawyers could compare with the body they viewed,” the sources share. “What was funny was that, the dealing officer said they no longer had the pictures of the lifeless infant. They said they deleted the pictures and that they no longer had them.”

Asked if they developed some for evidence sake, the sources narrate that the offices could not confirm, but were abundantly clear that they no longer had pictures of the lifeless infant’s body before and after conducting a postmortem examination.

“Earlier when the mother wanted to take pictures, hospital authorities blocked her. So she relied on pictures officers took,” he narrates. “But now, we have nothing to compare the infant to, leaving us with only one option, conduct another DNA at a hospital picked by us.”

The sources further shares that, the doctor who conducted the very postmortem and DNA examination about a month plus ago was present and when asked about what killed the child they claim is Ketai’s, he said postmortem results were not yet in.

“This is two months after the purported death of the infant, and UTH says they do not know what killed the child?” The source wonders.

They wonder how DNA results were quick to come before postmortem results.

Sharing how the infant the couple viewed looked like, the sources say the child had no intestines.

“The child did not look anything like that which Ketai saw after its birth. The experts present, though, say the child looks different because they removed intestines during postmortem and that, the infant’s stay in mortuary could have contributed to the way he now looks; different,” they share.

The couple is now in the process of carrying out an independent DNA test, the test which hopefully shall chart a new course of action depending on outcome of results.

TV Yatu shall keep you posted on new developments on this matter, as and when information is accessed.
