Kumwenda urges journalists to tell own stories

By Francis Chipalo

Renowned Zambian journalist Mwape Kumwenda is calling on her colleagues to take control of their narratives and share their stories.

Kumwenda, co-founder of Crown TV, believes journalists have a huge responsibility to use their platforms to make an impact, rather than being “buried in public good or interest”.

“Let’s tell our own stories, otherwise others will tell them for us,” she said, emphasizing that a free press starts with journalists exercising their freedom to express themselves.

With over 10 years of experience, Kumwenda is known for her courageous reporting on social and economic injustices, influencing national policy and institutional reform.

She has won several awards, including the 2015 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award and the 2017 Free Press Most Resilient Journalist Award.

As CEO of Crown Television Zambia, Kumwenda has implemented gender-balanced management and mentorship programs.

She currently hosts a show “Beyond news” on Crown Television where she features local scribes who get an opportunity to share their stories.

Among those that have been hosted so far include international award winning journalist, Arthur Davies Sikopo, as well as Crown TV’s own Sharon Kalimbula.
