Police in Lusaka have confirmed a public order incident involving students from Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) who protested over alleged insecurity and criminal activities in student boarding houses within the PHI residential area.
According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident occurred on April 19, 2026, and resulted in major disruption to traffic flow in parts of Lusaka.
Students Block Bennie Mwiinga Road
Mr. Chilabi stated that around 13:30 hours, police received reports that LMMU students had blocked Bennie Mwiinga Road, causing significant inconvenience to motorists and members of the public.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the students’ protest was triggered by concerns of growing insecurity and alleged criminal activities affecting students living in boarding houses in the PHI area.
Police Disperse Protesters Peacefully
Police officers quickly moved to the scene and engaged the students in what was described as a professional and peaceful manner.
The engagement resulted in the students dispersing.
Protest Resumes at Hybrid Roundabout
However, police said the students regrouped again around 14:00 hours at Hybrid Roundabout, where they proceeded to block the Great East Road, once again disrupting traffic.
Police responded promptly and managed to restore order.
Police Engage University Management
Mr. Chilabi revealed that the Zambia Police Service has since engaged university management and student representatives in an effort to address the concerns raised and strengthen safety and security measures in the affected areas.
Police Assure Students and Public
Meanwhile, police have reassured members of the public, particularly students, that the service remains committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents.
“The Service wishes to reassure members of the public, particularly the student community, that it remains fully committed to maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” Mr. Chilabi said.
Police noted that the situation is under close monitoring and further updates will be issued when necessary.
The statement was issued by Godfrey Chilabi, Public Relations Officer, Zambia Police Service.
