Former President Edgar Lungu’s body is expected to lie in state at his residence in Lusaka’s Chifwema area.
Family spokesperson Makebi Zulu made the announcement during a joint press briefing between the Lungu family and the government, held in South Africa on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
Mr. Zulu said the body will be transported from South Africa to Zambia on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, aboard a private charter provided by well-wishers, together with members of the former President’s family.
He further stated that the late President will receive full military honors, after which his body will be taken to the funeral house at his residence.
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, members of the public will be allowed to pay their last respects at Mulungushi Conference Centre. A state funeral, to be attended by various dignitaries, will be held at the same venue on Sunday, June 22.
Mr. Zulu also disclosed that a valedictory ceremony for Mr. Lungu will take place at the Supreme Court grounds in Lusaka, followed by a church service at the Show Grounds, presided over by Bishop Alick Banda.
He emphasized that the body will lie in state at the late President’s residence and will be returned there after each of the scheduled events.
It is yet to be confirmed whether the former President will be buried at the official Presidential burial site at Embassy Park or at his residence, as the Zambian government has not yet released an official funeral program.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa has announced that President Hakainde Hichilema will preside over the funeral proceedings.
The President has also extended the period of National Mourning to June 23, 2025.
