A 51-YEAR-OLD man of Siavonga has ended his life by hanging himself for failure to adequately fend for his wife.
Southern Province police commanding officer Auxensio Daka says police received a report from Evelyn Muzumba, 37, of Kanyelele Township, that her husband, Likando Kalumiana, had allegedly killed himself.
Mr Daka said the incident happened yesterday around 05:00 hours at the couple’s residence.
“Some facts given are that the deceased used to drink alcohol excessively and frequently mentioned his intention to commit suicide.
“On Tuesday, he informed his wife of his plans to end his life due to his inability to adequately care for her,” he said.
Mr Daka said on Wednesday around 07:00 hours, Mr Kalumiana started drinking beer at home until 20:00 hours, when he went to bed without eating or speaking to anyone.
“Today (yesterday) at around 05:00 hours, he left the bedroom and was found hanging from the sitting room window,” he said.
Mr Daka said police visited the scene and no foul play is suspected. Meanwhile, the 10 people who drowned in Lwena river in Kawambwa District on Monday have been laid to rest.
The victims were part of 16 men who were on their way to work when the paddle of their boat broke, causing the boat to lose direction.
The burial took place on Wednesday in the district. Luapula Province Minister Nason Musonda, who led scores of Kawambwa residents in paying their last respects, said Government regrets the death of the 10 employees of Kawambwa Sugar Plantation.
