Maxwell Chongu

Citizen’s First aspiring Member of Parliament for Kafue West, Maxwell Chongu, has pledged to prioritize peace, development, job creation, and empowerment for local people as he prepares for the 2026 General Elections.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Chongu spoke about his long-standing relationship with UPND Lusaka Province Chairman and Kafue West aspiring candidate Obvious Mwaliteta, describing him as an elder brother he has respected since childhood.

Chongu revealed that when Mwaliteta was considering leaving the Patriotic Front (PF) to join the UPND, he personally visited him alongside former Cabinet Minister Ronald Chitotela in an attempt to convince him to remain in the PF.

“I have great respect and love for Mr. Obvious Mwaliteta Summerton as my elder brother who has seen me grow as a little kid to become the man I am today,” Chongu wrote.

He further disclosed that he once protected Mwaliteta from possible attacks during politically tense moments despite him being in the opposition at the time.

“On two occasions, one at Levy Mall when news came to my ears that Mwaliteta was to be attacked by cadres, I rushed there and made sure I stood next to him so that he is not attacked,” Chongu explained.

He also mentioned another incident in Chalala’s G-Greens area where he ensured Mwaliteta’s safety, describing it as an act of brotherly love and respect.

Despite now contesting against Mwaliteta in the race for Kafue West parliamentary seat, Chongu said the election campaign should remain peaceful and violence-free.

“This election will definitely be violence free, full of brotherly love and may the best leader prevail according to the collective decision that will be made through the ballot by the people of Kafue,” he stated.

Chongu said his decision to participate in the elections is driven by his desire to see meaningful development in Kafue and improve the lives of local people.

According to the aspiring lawmaker, economic opportunities, road infrastructure, job creation, and empowerment programs for women and youths will be among his key priorities if elected.

“Its high time we unlocked opportunities of economic value to create both business and employment real-time opportunities for our locals,” he said.

He added that local residents must be prioritized when it comes to accessing employment and business opportunities within the constituency.

Chongu also stressed the importance of improving road networks in Kafue, saying infrastructure development is critical to unlocking economic growth and improving people’s living standards.

“Kafue can never be said to be developed if the wellbeing of our people is subjected to abject poverty,” he noted..
The Citizen’s First aspiring candidate concluded by saying that women and youth empowerment will remain central to his development agenda for Kafue West.
