A 31-year-old woman has been granted a divorce from her husband of two years by the Mazabuka Local Court following marital disputes.

Carol Haguyu told the court that problems in her home began in 2023 when her now ex-husband, Julius Silwebe, started locking her inside the house while she was pregnant as he went drinking.

She added that despite Silwebe finding employment at a named company, he was not providing for the household but accumulated K12,000 in credit, using household goods as collateral.

Haguyu stated that since January 2024, Silwebe went to Lusaka under the pretext of looking for employment, but it was just a ploy to escape his creditors, and he has not returned since.

Despite the court issuing summons to Silwebe on several occasions, he did not show up, leading to a bench warrant being issued for his arrest, but he remains at large.

The court exercised its power to dissolve the marriage pursuant to Section 230 (b) of the Local Court Handbook, which states that if either party is aware of a case but does not appear, a decision can be made in their absence.

In the ruling, it was held that Haguyu is still youthful and needs a husband to console her, but with Silwebe disappearing, the marriage was dissolved.
