MINISTRY OF YOUTH, SPORT AND ARTS PURSUES SOLAR PARTNERSHIP TO POWER NATIONAL STADIA
Harare, Zimbabwe — April 23rd, 2025.
The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts has taken a significant step towards embracing clean and sustainable energy by engaging with FLYT Power Energy, a leading Chinese solar company, during a working visit to Harare, Zimbabwe.
The visit, undertaken at the invitation of FLYT Power Energy, has allowed Ministry officials to conduct on-site assessments of the company’s ongoing solar projects, most notably, the successful electrification of a mining facility in Zimbabwe. The tour formed part of the Ministry’s wider efforts to explore renewable energy alternatives that support national sustainability and infrastructural advancement.
As a result of these engagements, the Ministry is considering a partnership with FLYT Power Energy to install solar energy systems at two of Zambia’s major sporting landmarks: Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola and National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.
A feasibility study is scheduled to commence at Heroes Stadium, currently undergoing renovation to assess the feasibility of integrating solar power into the facility. The proposed systems have the potential to produce up to 5 Megawatts of energy, making the stadiums more energy-efficient and potentially capable of contributing excess electricity to the national grid.
“The benefits of this project are multifaceted,” Youth, Sport and Arts Minister Hon. Elvis C Nkandu said. “Beyond reducing operational costs, we see this as a way to improve energy reliability, promote green infrastructure, and align with Zambia’s commitment to sustainable development.”
