The leadership of Operation Save MMD, led by its Chairperson Gaston Sichilima, paid a courtesy call on Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) founder member Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika.

The delegation comprised Dauzeni Tembo, Chairperson for Security; Mr. Charles Kaile, National Coordinator; Malambo, Lusaka Province Coordinator; and Muma, Lusaka Province Chairlady.

Sichilima said the visit was prompted by recent developments surrounding the irregular pronouncement by Dr. Nevers Mumba purporting to have rebranded the MMD into the New Nation Party — a move that has sparked widespread condemnation.

Sichilima reiterated that Dr. Mumba has, in fact, formed a new political party and not rebranded the MMD.

He emphasized that the MMD remains a distinct, legally registered political organization, adding that Operation Save MMD and other leaders who worked under New Hope MMD faction led by Dr. Mumba, we are now working together under one united MMD.

Meanwhile, Mbikusita Lewanika warmly welcomed the delegation and provided a moving account of how the MMD was born out of the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of Zambians who yearned for democracy and multiparty governance.

He reminded the delegation that no individual owns the MMD, stating:

“No one can rename the MMD. This party was built on sacrifice, I personally used my resources and even offered my own house as the first MMD secretariat, which I eventually lost. Yet I never claimed to own it.”

Lewanika affirmed that, although he has retired from active politics, he remains committed to defending the MMD’s existence and legacy.
