THE number of people who have died after consuming the illicit alcohol made using methylated spirit and shoe polish which also caused them blindness, severe diarrhoea and abdominal pain in Zimba, Namwala, Pemba and Kalabo has risen to 18.

Four people from Sinumbi village in Kalabo, Western Province, have died while seven are in hospital after consuming the poisonous alcohol. Kalabo police officer-in-charge Humphrey Banda said the affected individuals lost eye sight, consciousness and had abnormal breathing patterns.

Kalabo district health director Mbwayu Neto said a 43-year-old woman who took the drink with 29 others has lost her sight and is in admission at Kalomo District Hospital.
