Athletes Commission Chairperson, Richard Mulenga, has called for equity in all sports disciplines in line with government’s aspirations to promote and enhace all sports.

Speaking during a press briefing today, Mr Mulenga noted with concern, the lack of equity when it comes to certain sports disciplines, and called for equality when it comes to sports sponsorship and support.

He said Zambia has made tremendous progress in the development of various sports disciplines such as Hockey, Netball, Volleyball, among many others, which unfortunately do not get the desired recognition like other sports disciplines such as soccer.

He said it however comforting to note that Republican President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, has prioritized the promotion of all sports disciplines, which every stakeholder in and out of sports should support and embrace in order to elevate Zambia’s sporting trajectory.

He said lack of timely sponsorship for certain sports is negatively affecting sports promotion which ultimately affects individual sports men and women, as well as the nation at large.

Mr Mulenga who thanked the different Sports mother bodies such as NOCZ, National sports Council and others for working tirelessly to ensure that the everyday running of Sports Associations is done well, said all athletes should be given priority in all sport aspect regardless of the sport type, rank or status.

“2023 has been a wonderful year with so many great achievements to celebrate, such as the historic appearance of the Copper Queens to the World Cup, the qualifying of Chipolopolo to the Afcon, and not forgetting other sports disciplines and individuals that have brought pride to our nation such as Muzala Samukonga from Athletics Association who has continued his dominance on international scene” Mr Mulenga said

He has further called on all athletes to keep working hard and continue with their extraordinary performance and qualifying to bigger and higher tournaments so that the much needed support like the increment of incentives similar to the one made in an announcement by the Minister of Sports Honorable Elvis Nkandu on Saturday 17th June 2023 can continue.

Mr Mulenga is hopeful that the athletes will become more energized and charged up to take up new and challenging assignments as they continue working hard to keep flying the Zambia flag high.
