One Dead, 12 Injured in Great East Road Minibus Accident Near Showgrounds

The Zambia Police Service in Lusaka has recorded a fatal road traffic accident along Great East Road, near Showgrounds Bus Stop, in which one passenger has died while twelve others sustained serious injuries.

According to a police statement issued on March 30, 2026, the accident occurred around 15:30 hours and involved a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number AIE 6663, which was carrying 13 passengers and heading towards the Lusaka Central Business District.

Police identified the driver as Kakoma Oscar, aged 45, of Chawama Compound, who sustained minor injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Daniel Mwanza, aged 47, of John Laing Compound. Police stated that Mwanza sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.

Meanwhile, the twelve injured passengers were rushed to the same hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed, causing the minibus to hit a streetlight pole before overturning.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited in the mortuary at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, awaiting a postmortem examination.

Police investigations into the accident are still ongoing.

The statement was issued by Godfrey Chilabi, Public Relations Officer, Zambia Police Service.
