A member of the clergy has described some opposition political party leaders in Zambia as “childish” and lacking a vision for the country, further challenging them to be relevant.
Bishop John Mambo who is Chikondi Foundation president said it is unfortunate that currently, there was no opposition in the country good enough to offer President Hakainde Hichilema’s Government meaningful checks and balances.
The clergyman wondered why some members of the opposition had chosen to celebrate the country’s challenges instead of offering solutions and alternatives saying such is what is expected from them.
“For me, the opposition in Zambia is childish because they are not doing what is expected of them. They are supposed to inspire confidence in us being Governments in waiting, but what we are seeing now is the exact opposite and that really pains my heart personally,” Bishop Mambo said in an interview.
And Bishop Mambo further challenged the opposition to up their game if Zambians were to take them seriously.
“If anything, it feels like we do not have an opposition in the country because what kind of leaders rejoice over their own country’s problems? We have load shedding and the opposition is celebrating. Is that what it means to be in the opposition? Certainly not! My call to them is that they are citizens of this country before being politicians and therefore, they should put the country first because if they are not directly affected by some of these challenges, they have relatives who are affected. This is the time for round table meetings aimed at looking for solutions and alternatives to our problems,” he said.
Bishop Mambo observed that the UPND Government had restored peace that had seemingly been lost previously.
“If it was in the past, some of them would have been in jail facing treason charges because of some of these statements they are issuing but this Government has ensured that rule of law is restored,” he added.
