A 36-year-old woman from Petauke District, Eastern Province has died after reportedly taking her own life following difficulties in settling a K4,000 debt with the village bank.

ESTHER MWANZA, of Garden Compound, is alleged to have ingested a poisonous substance around 17:00 hours yesterday.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson MWEEMBA said the deceased, who leaves behind three children, had confided in her younger sister about her struggle to repay the village bank loan.

Mr. MWEEMBA said her seven-year-old son found her sweating excessively and alerted relatives.

Upon checking, the family discovered that her condition had worsened and she was struggling to breathe.

She was rushed to Petauke District Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Mr. MWEEMBA said police did not suspect foul play, noting that the deceased had been foaming from the mouth.
