POLICE in Kasama District have arrested a 17-year-old woman of Shintashika Village in Chief Munkonge’s Chiefdom for stealing a seven months old baby.
Northern Province Police Commanding Officer Gloria Mulele confirmed the development to ZANIS in a statement.
Ms. Mulele said the woman identified as Hellen Mwamba is alleged to have stolen the baby on Monday this week around 17:00 hours in the same village.
She disclosed that Mwamba, who is a friend to Catherine Kesia Sampa, the mother of the child, was left with the child as she went into a shop to buy some household items.
The Commanding Officer said upon returning, Ms. Sampa did not find the woman and the baby.
She explained that the mother of the child reported the matter of the missing baby to police.
“When she came back, she did not find her friend. She searched the surrounding areas but could still not see her anywhere. She later reported the matter to the Police,” said Ms. Mulele.
Ms. Mulele explained that members of the public however found the named woman with the baby in Fundi Village in Chief Mutale Mukulu in Kasama.
She stated that the woman was later taken to police in Kasama where she is detained.
