Preparations to commemorate the Day of the African Child, have intensified, with children gathering in Lusaka, to undergo training on “children’s rights in the digital environment”, ahead of the big day tomorrow.
The day of the African Child will be commemorated on 16th June 2023, under the theme “The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment”
The Day of the African Child, was inspired on 16th June 1976, when students in Soweto, South Africa, marched in protest against the poor quality of education and demanded to be taught in their languages.
Children drawn from different schools and parts of the country, are undergoing the three days training workshop, were they are sharing wide ranging knowledge on various issues affecting them, and getting more understanding into the contents of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, for them to fully understand and appreciate their roles and responsibilities.
Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Director for Child Development, Ms. Beatrice Muyambango, who officially opened the training workshop yesterday, therefore encouraged the participating children to feel free and interact with each and learn more about issues that directly and indirectly affect them.
She said Africa is one, and children should therefore live in harmony, in accordance to the values espoused in each country’s agenda of promoting and enhancing children’s rights.
And African Union (AU) Officer in Charge, Ms. Catherine Wanjiru Maina, said the training is very important for children to contextualize both the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
