President Hakainde Hichilema has commended all political parties and independent candidates for maintaining a peaceful and orderly campaign environment in the Chawama Constituency and other wards ahead of tomorrow’s by-elections.

He observed that the current atmosphere stands in stark contrast to previous electoral periods, which were often marred by violence, intimidation, and fear that undermined democratic participation.

The Head of State said in the past, political competition was frequently driven by coercion rather than persuasion, denying citizens the freedom to engage openly across party lines.

While on a working vacation attending to his farming activities in Southern Province, the Head of State has continued to monitor developments and receive daily briefings from the ground.

He expressed satisfaction with reports indicating that political players were able to interact freely and respectfully, even when meeting during the campaign period.

The President reiterated that this is the democratic culture he hopes to see sustained—not only in these by-elections, but also as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.

He emphasised that political competition must be based on ideas, policies, and service to the people, rather than violence, intimidation, or abusive language.

The Head of State urged all political actors to promote conduct and messaging that foster unity and contribute to national development.

He reaffirmed that peace remains Zambia’s most valuable democratic asset.
