President Hichilema Warns Against Electoral Violence, Calls for Swift Arrests of Perpetrators

Hakainde Hichilema

Lusaka, Zambia — President Hakainde Hichilema has issued a stern warning against acts of electoral violence and intimidation, stating that his government will not tolerate lawlessness during the nomination and electoral process.

In a statement addressed to fellow citizens, President Hichilema reaffirmed his earlier position that any individuals involved in electoral disorder will face the full force of the law, regardless of their political party, status, or influence.

“A few days ago, I made it clear that electoral lawlessness will not be tolerated and that all perpetrators, regardless of political affiliation or social standing, would face the full force of the law. That position remains firm and unchanged,” the President said.

The Head of State described as unacceptable the scenes circulating on social media showing individuals allegedly attempting to prevent others from lawfully filing nominations.

According to President Hichilema, such conduct is not only undemocratic but also a direct attack on the rule of law and Zambia’s democratic principles.

“The scenes circulating on social and other media of individuals attempting to prevent the lawful filing of nominations are unacceptable, undemocratic, and a direct violation of the rule of law,” he stated.

HH Directs Police to Act Quickly

President Hichilema further directed law enforcement agencies to act professionally and swiftly by arresting all those responsible for acts of intimidation, violence, and disorder.

“I therefore expect law enforcement agencies to move swiftly and professionally to arrest all those responsible. Zambia is governed by laws, not intimidation, violence, or mob conduct,” he said.

The President also warned those who may be planning to disrupt the democratic process that they will face decisive action from the State.

He stressed that Zambia will not be governed through violence, intimidation, or mob behaviour, emphasizing that peace and order must prevail as the country moves toward its next elections.

“Let me be unequivocal: those who wish to test this Government’s resolve to maintain law and order are entirely on their own. The State will act firmly and decisively against all forms of electoral violence and disorder,” he added.

The President’s message comes amid heightened political activity across the country as political parties and aspiring candidates prepare for key electoral processes, including nominations.

His statement has since sparked widespread discussion online, with many Zambians supporting the call for law and order, while others are urging authorities to ensure fairness and professionalism in enforcing electoral laws.
