President Hakainde Hichilema says former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is the only Zambian former head of state who died without having his presidential immunity lifted, even after leaving public office.
Speaking at State House during a courtesy call by the leadership of the United Church of Zambia (UCZ), President Hichilema says the government wishes for the late president to be buried in Zambia. He hasc emphasized that while President Lungu was a member of his family, he also belonged to the nation by virtue of having served as its leader.
Meanwhile, United Church of Zambia Synod Bishop, Reverend Festus Chulu, says the period of mourning the late sixth Republican President should not be a time of division, but an opportunity to foster dialogue, restore unity, and reaffirm Zambia’s longstanding identity as a nation rooted in peace, love, justice, and reconciliation.
Bishop Chulu has further commended President Hichilema for providing sound leadership that has preserved national stability during challenging times.
