Despite the temperature dropping as low as 7°c in Pretoria, South Africa the women’s hockey national team managed to beat Namibia 3-2 at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers games taking place at Tuks Stadium.

Martha Kalomo 8′, Carol Nakombe 36′, and Christine Kaluba 50′ scored for Zambia while Tisha Semedo 37′ and Adore Meyer 47′ scored for Namibia.

Women’s hockey national team assistant coach Godfrey Lwando has described today’s win as motivating for the team. He says yesterday’s loss made the team to re-strategize a move which has worked for the team.

Meanwhile, striker Martha Kalomo says the weather contributed to her team not scoring a lot of goals. She says people back home should continue showing them support adding that this is just the beginning.

The men’s hockey national team has been knocked out of the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers games after losing two games in a row. The team in their first game with Ghana lost 3-1 and further went in to lose 1-0 against Kenya in the second game.

Hockey national team coach Elvis Bwalya says the boys played well despite causing a penalty in the fourth quarter which saw their opponents score.

Bwalya says the shift will now be to focus on next year’s African Games to be hosted by Ghana.

Meanwhile, hockey player Shadrick Katele has attributed the loss and subsequent knockout to the qualifiers games to lack of exposure to similar games. He has called on relevant authorities to continue supporting the team and ensure that they compete in more competitive games.

The next game the men’s team will play is against Egypt on Wednesday.
