South UPND ward officials decry secretariat interference as Muchindu warns against ‘bought’ candidates

By Francis Chipalo

UPND ward officials in Choma South have raised concern over alleged interference by top party leadership at the secretariat during the candidate adoption process, warning they will not allow candidates to be imposed on the people.

Speaking during a meeting in Singani, and Sikalongo Ward, officials from Sikalongo and neighboring Siaskabole wards said grassroots structures must be respected in choosing who represents the party in the 13 August 2026 general elections.

“The biggest problem is top leadership at the secretariat,” one ward official said. “We will not allow some individuals to impose certain candidates upon the people.”

Addressing the officials, UPND Choma South parliamentary candidate Joe Muchindu backed the call for clean adoptions and cautioned against aspirants who attempt to “buy” their way onto the ballot.

Muchindu warned ward and constituency officials “not to be bought by certain leaders seeking public office” as the ruling party concludes its adoption process.

Meanwhile, Muchindu urged the officials to give President Hakainde Hichilema a second term.

“A wrong candidate will not only cost the party, but will result in constituencies remaining underdeveloped,” Muchindu said. “Some areas have lagged behind in terms of development due to lack of leadership.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to serve Choma South as its first Member of Parliament if elected. The constituency was created following the recent delimitation exercise.

The UPND, led by President Hichilema, is finalizing its candidate list amid adoption disputes reported in several constituencies.
