The Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) says it is committed to sustainable tobacco production, as mandated by the Tobacco Act No. 10 of 2022.
TBZ Executive Director Robert Mwale stated that the regulatory body has partnered with stakeholders such as Community Markets for Conservation (COMACO) to promote tree planting in high tobacco-producing chiefdoms, ensuring a balanced approach to economic growth and environmental conservation.
Mr Mwale emphasised that sustainability is at the heart of TBZ operations, working to ensure a greener future for Zambia’s tobacco industry.
He explained that the collaborative effort aims to contribute to a countrywide target of planting 120 million trees, with Eastern Province alone targeting 40 million trees by 2026.
Mr Mwale noted that the initiative promotes environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture practices that align with TBZ’s commitment to responsible tobacco production.
He added that TBZ has been encouraging sponsors to support their growers in planting trees, promoting environmental stewardship across the value chain.
Mr Mwale affirmed that TBZ remains open to partnering and working with interested parties to champion environmental stewardship.
He stressed that through these efforts, TBZ aims to maintain Zambia’s reputation as a responsible tobacco producer, benefiting both farmers and the environment.
